The World at Their Fingertips? Student Internet Access & Control in Schools

On Thursday, November 17, Yahoo! Safely, in partnership with Common Sense Media and Teaching Matters, held a live broadcast about the promise and perils of technology in schools. The discussion, moderated by Nick Siewert, of Teaching Matters, addressed key points facing educators all around the country. Should educators structure internet access for students in schools in a closed or open environment? What is their role outside the classroom? What is the balance between ensuring student safety and teaching ethical use?

Nick Siewert led an expert panel, with Aileen Abrams of the New York State School Boards Association, John Benson of the NYC Department of Education, Tim DiScipio of ePals, Michelle Luhtala of New Canaan High School, and Rebecca Randall of Common Sense Media. Each panelist brought a variety of expertise and viewpoints for a thought-provoking discussion and debate.
