When Anne Collier and I wrote our long out-of-print book,  MySpace Unraveled, we pointed out that MySpace was the largest referrer to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. We noted that kids were alive because of the way friends had reached out to save their friends. Facebook, of course, took MySpace’s place in that r... more »

"Internet safety," is mostly about behavior in the blended world where kids live on and offline. How they treat themsel... more »

Time to Take the “Cyber” Out of “Cyberbullying”

Larry Magid on 2/24/11

tags: cyberbullying, harrassment

We don’t call it “pencil bullying” when someone uses a wooden stick with lead inside to write someone a threatening note. When a person shakes her fist in front of someone’s face, we don’t call it “fist bullying.” And when kids don’t let other kids sit at their lunch table, we don’t call it “table bullying.” Yet when someone us... more »

tags: online id, privacy, social networking

The headline of the press pitch I received a few days ago read “McAfee to release shocking findings of teen’s online behavior,” but the actual data from the study, “Secret Life of Teens,” are far from shocking. McAfee’s study (PDF) is actually a reassuring portrait of how most young people are exercising reasonable caution in t... more »
